Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau has resigned as President of
the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), bringing his tenure at the helm of the
country’s football administration to an end.
Gusau announced his resignation on Thursday at the NFF
Secretariat in Abuja, confirming reports that had circulated for several days
about his departure and that of some members of the federation’s Executive
Committee.
Although the reports had initially lacked official
confirmation, Gusau eventually addressed journalists at a press conference in
Abuja, where he formally announced his decision to step down.
His resignation comes amid growing criticism from
Nigerians and football stakeholders over the direction of the country’s
football under his leadership.
The NFF administration had come under increasing
scrutiny following a string of disappointing performances by Nigeria’s national
teams. One of the major setbacks was the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for
the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a development that generated widespread
frustration among supporters and football administrators.
Gusau’s departure has now created fresh uncertainty
around the leadership and immediate future of Nigerian football, with attention
expected to shift towards the restructuring of the NFF and the process of
appointing new leadership.
The resignation also comes at a crucial time, as
authorities consider broader reforms aimed at addressing the challenges facing
the administration and development of football in the country.
