The 17th edition of the Headies Awards, Nigeria’s leading music event, lit up the Landmark Events Centre in Victoria Island, Lagos, on Sunday, April 27, 2025. It was a night filled with surprises, emotional tributes, and a strong showcase of Afrobeats’ global dominance.

Social media, especially X (formerly Twitter), erupted with heartfelt reactions as the late Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, was honoured posthumously. Mohbad clinched four awards, including Best Street-Hop Artiste, Viewer’s Choice, and Best Collaboration for “Egwu” with Chike — nearly two years after his untimely death in September 2023.

Fans flooded X with tributes, celebrating Mohbad’s enduring legacy and the recognition of his impact on Nigerian music.

The night also marked the Headies’ return to Nigeria after two years in Atlanta, delivering electrifying performances and a celebration of the country’s vibrant music culture. Davido took home the coveted Artiste of the Year award, while Rema’s HEIS album earned him both Album of the Year and Afrobeats Album of the Year, solidifying their influence in the industry.

Performances by Shallipopi, Seyi Vibez, and Qing Madi, alongside Mohbad’s wins, defined a memorable evening that highlighted both seasoned stars and emerging voices.

However, the event wasn’t without issues. Poor time management and technical glitches led to an abrupt ending before some categories — like Best R&B Single, Best Collaboration, and Lyricist on the Roll — could be announced, drawing sharp criticism online.

A Brief History of The Headies:
Founded in 2006 by Ayo Animashaun’s Hip Hop World Magazine, The Headies began as the Hip Hop World Awards, celebrating Nigeria’s growing hip-hop scene. Over time, it expanded to cover Afrobeats, R&B, and other genres, reflecting the dynamic growth of the Nigerian music industry.

The Headies plaque, designed by Matthias Aragbada and crafted by Jide Adewoye, symbolizes the resilience and creativity of young Nigerian artists. From its early days at the Muson Centre to its global recognition today, The Headies remains a key cultural milestone in Nigerian music.

Mohbad’s Emotional Triumph:
The most touching moment of the night came when Mohbad’s widow, Wunmi, and their son, Liam, accepted his award for Best Street-Hop Artiste, presented by Regina Daniels and BBNaija alum Bambam.

Holding the plaque, Wunmi shared, “Although Mohbad is not here, he lives on through our son, Liam. Thank you for this honour.”

Mohbad’s seven nominations, including for Song of the Year and Afrobeats Single of the Year, underscored his lasting impact. His wins for Best Collaboration, Best Music Video, and Viewer’s Choice for “Egwu” prompted an outpouring of tributes online, with posts like @MusiqFro’s “Imole lives on” resonating widely.
