Security has been tightened at the Kano State
Government House amid growing speculation that Governor Abba Yusuf may defect
from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress
(APC).
On Monday, combined security personnel from the
Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS) were deployed
at strategic locations around the Government House. Access was subjected to
strict identification checks, and security procedures were intensified to
control entry.
Rift with Kwankwaso
The heightened security comes amid reports of a
disagreement between Governor Yusuf and his political mentor, Senator Rabiu
Musa Kwankwaso, the national leader of the NNPP. Kwankwaso has reportedly
opposed Yusuf’s alleged plan to defect, warning that such a move could
destabilise the NNPP and undermine the Kwankwasiyya movement.
However, Governor Yusuf has denied any rift with his
mentor. The situation has reportedly caused tension within the NNPP, exposing
cracks in the long-standing alliance between the two leaders.
In a statement, NNPP Kano State Chairman Hashim
Dungurawa emphasised that neither the state nor national leadership of the
party supports any defection to the APC. “We are aware of the developments
happening here in Kano State concerning some individuals who intend to defect
to the APC. I want to make it clear that the Kano State party, the national
party, and our national leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, together with
other leaders, do not approve of what is happening,” he said.
Kano’s Political Significance
Kano is widely regarded as a politically strategic
state due to its large voter population. It consistently features among the
states with the highest number of registered voters, often influencing national
election outcomes.
Any political shift by the sitting governor,
particularly involving Kwankwaso’s loyal grassroots network, could have a major
impact on the electoral landscape, making the speculation of Yusuf’s defection
a matter of national interest.
