The United States has revoked more than 100,000 visas
since President Donald Trump took office on an anti-migrant platform, marking a
record for a single year, the State Department reported on Monday.
“The Trump administration has no higher priority than
protecting American citizens and upholding American sovereignty,” State
Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said.
The number of revoked visas since Trump’s second
inauguration on January 20, 2025, is two and a half times higher than the total
revoked in 2024 under President Joe Biden. The State Department said thousands
of the visa cancellations were linked to criminal offences, including assault
and drunk driving.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio has also highlighted
his use of a McCarthy-era law to revoke visas for students who protested
against Israel, although some high-profile targets have successfully challenged
deportation orders in court. According to the department, approximately 8,000
of the revoked visas were held by students.
The Trump administration has also tightened visa
vetting, including screening social media activity of applicants, as part of
broader immigration enforcement measures.
The visa revocations accompany a wider campaign of
mass deportations. Last month, the Department of Homeland Security reported
that the administration had deported more than 605,000 individuals, while
another 2.5 million left the country voluntarily.
These actions highlight the administration’s
intensified approach to immigration control, drawing both support and criticism
domestically and internationally.
