The Ijaw and Itsekiri ethnic nationalities have
reached a landmark agreement on the representation of the proposed Warri
Federal Constituency II in the House of Representatives.
The resolution was achieved on Friday night during a
meeting held at the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu
Ribadu, in Abuja.
Under the terms of the agreement, both groups approved
a rotational arrangement for the House of Representatives seat. The arrangement
provides that the constituency's representation will alternate between the Ijaw
and Itsekiri ethnic groups.
According to the resolution, the Ijaw nationality will
occupy the seat first for two consecutive terms. Afterward, the position will
rotate to the Itsekiri nationality, which will also hold it for two consecutive
terms.
The agreement is expected to strengthen political
cooperation and promote peaceful coexistence between the two ethnic groups in
the area.
Former Deputy Governor of Delta State, Kingsley
Otuaro, and Dr. Eric Omare signed the document on behalf of the Ijaw
nationality. The Itsekiri nationality was represented by Sir A.S. Mene and
Chief Robinson Ariyo.
National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu signed on
behalf of the Federal Government, while Olorogun Victor Okumagba and Chief
Westham Adehor served as witnesses to the agreement.
Stakeholders expressed optimism that the power-sharing
arrangement would help foster unity, reduce political tensions, and ensure fair
representation within the proposed constituency.
