The Police Command has arrested a suspect for
allegedly circulating false information capable of causing public panic and
disrupting peace in the state.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on
Friday night by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Joshua Ukandu.
According to Ukandu, the arrest followed an extensive
intelligence-driven investigation that revealed the report shared by the
suspect was false. The investigation subsequently led to the suspect’s
apprehension.
The spokesperson stated that the Command remains
committed to maintaining public order and ensuring that individuals responsible
for spreading misinformation are held accountable.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police,
CP Hope Okafor, urged residents to verify the accuracy of information before
posting or sharing it on social media and other communication platforms.
She warned that the dissemination of false reports
could create unnecessary fear, panic, and threaten public peace and security.
The Commissioner further reaffirmed the Command’s
resolve to prosecute anyone found guilty of creating or spreading fake news,
stressing that such actions are punishable under the law.
She called on members of the public to act responsibly
and cooperate with security agencies by sharing only verified information.
