The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)
has announced the closure of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise,
urging eligible Nigerians to complete their registration or update their voter
information before the deadline.
In a post on X on Sunday, the electoral body reminded
citizens that participation in the CVR exercise is a mandatory requirement for
voting in the 2027 general elections.
"Time is running out, but there's still an
opportunity to make your voice count," the commission stated.
"Register to vote or update your voter
information before the close of Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) today,
Sunday, July 26, 2026."
INEC advised Nigerians who had not yet registered to
complete the process through its online CVR portal or visit any of its state
and local government offices before the exercise officially ended.
The commission explained that the exercise also
covered requests for voter transfers, correction of personal information, and
the replacement of lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
The conclusion of the registration marks the end of a
nationwide voter enrolment exercise that was conducted in several phases over
the past year.
The first phase began in August 2025 with online
pre-registration, while physical registration commenced on August 25. By the
end of that phase in December, INEC had recorded 2,572,054 completed
registrations, comprising 1,503,832 online registrations and 1,068,222
in-person registrations.
The second phase, which ran from January 5 to April
17, 2026, recorded 3,748,704 completed registrations nationwide.
INEC subsequently launched a third phase in May 2026
and later extended the exercise by two weeks in July to allow more eligible
Nigerians the opportunity to register.
With the deadline now reached, the commission urged
prospective voters not to delay future electoral processes, stressing that
voter registration remains a fundamental requirement for citizens who wish to
participate in the 2027 general elections.
