The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)
has extended the ongoing nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR)
exercise by an additional two weeks, shifting the deadline from July 10 to July
24, 2026.
The announcement was made on Friday in Abuja by the
National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education
Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna. He explained that the decision followed a
review of the exercise and consultations with the commission's state offices,
political parties, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders.
According to INEC, the extension is aimed at giving
more eligible Nigerians the opportunity to register ahead of future elections.
The commission noted that the CVR exercise, which began on August 18, 2025, has
recorded significant participation, and the additional two weeks will ensure
that more citizens are captured in the National Register of Voters.
As part of efforts to improve accessibility, INEC also
announced the launch of a self-service online voter registration platform for
first-time registrants. The service will go live on Wednesday, July 8, 2026,
through the dedicated portal, cvr.inecnigeria.org, where users will also
find a step-by-step guide to complete the registration process.
The commission said the new platform will enable
eligible Nigerians to initiate and complete their voter registration, including
biometric capture, using compatible personal devices without the need to visit
an INEC office physically.
INEC explained that the system is equipped with
identity verification, biometric validation, and backend integrity checks to
safeguard the credibility and accuracy of the National Register of Voters.
The electoral body urged all eligible Nigerians who
have not yet registered to take advantage of the extended registration period
and the newly introduced digital platform, reaffirming its commitment to
delivering a credible, inclusive, and technology-driven voter registration
process.
