Ireland head coach Heimir Hallgrímsson has dismissed Cristiano Ronaldo’s accusation that he influenced the referee's decision to send the Portuguese star off during Portugal’s 2–0 World Cup qualifying defeat in Dublin on Thursday.

What Happened

  • Ronaldo, 40, was sent off in the second half after elbowing Dara O’Shea in the back during an off-the-ball tussle inside the box.
  • Before the match, Ronaldo claimed Hallgrímsson had tried to pressure match officials not to be influenced by his superstar status.
  • After receiving the red card, Ronaldo exchanged heated words with the Ireland coach.

Hallgrímsson’s Response

Speaking to reporters, Hallgrímsson denied any wrongdoing:

“It had nothing to do with me. It was his action on the pitch that cost him a red card—unless I got into his head.”

He described Ronaldo’s behaviour as:

“A moment of a little silliness.”

Implications for Ronaldo

  • This is Ronaldo’s first-ever red card for Portugal.
  • Depending on the length of the suspension, he could miss the start of the 2026 World Cup, should Portugal qualify.
  • He will definitely miss Sunday’s qualifier against Armenia, where Portugal hope to secure their spot in the tournament.

Portugal Coach Defends Him

Portugal manager Roberto Martínez defended his captain:

“It’s difficult for a player like Cristiano in the penalty area. Defenders were constantly grabbing him. There was no violence — he tried to push them away.”
