Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong will be out of
action for five to six weeks after sustaining a right hamstring injury during
training, the club confirmed on Thursday.
The 28-year-old is set to miss key fixtures, including
Barcelona’s Champions League last-16 tie against either Paris Saint-Germain or
Newcastle United, as well as La Liga matches against Villarreal, Athletic
Bilbao, Sevilla, and Rayo Vallecano.
De Jong will also be unavailable for next Tuesday’s
Spanish Cup semi-final second leg, where Barcelona aim to overturn a 4-0
first-leg deficit against Atletico Madrid.
In a statement on their website, Barcelona said: “De
Jong injured his right hamstring during training this morning and will be out
for five to six weeks.”
The Catalans currently lead La Liga by just one point
over Real Madrid ahead of their home clash with Villarreal on Saturday.
De Jong is also expected to miss the March
international window, where the Netherlands are scheduled to face Norway and
Ecuador in pre-World Cup friendlies.
