Singer-songwriter Johnny Drille has advised
upcoming artists to prioritize financial discipline and long-term planning
over mimicking the extravagant lifestyles often associated with the
entertainment industry.
Speaking on the CreativTEA Podcast, Drille
warned young creatives against the pressure to match the spending habits of
established stars, stressing the importance of saving and investing
during their peak years.
He noted that fame is often fleeting, and public
interest inevitably shifts to newer talents — making it crucial for artists to
build a solid financial foundation early on.
“As much as we want to believe that everybody’s going
to be relevant forever, everybody will not be relevant forever,” Drille said.
“Everybody has a set amount of time where you’re going to pop and make money.
Then a time will come when people will move on to the next guy. So you have to
make the most of that span — by saving and investing.”
The Mavin Records artist shared his personal
example, revealing that he and his wife recently bought a house and are
building another for his parents in Benin.
He cautioned that many of the luxury displays seen
online are exaggerated or even fake.
“I see a lot of artists trying to copy what Wizkid or
Burna Boy are doing — flaunting cars and spending on luxury they don’t need.
Sometimes, a lot of those things are not even real. People borrow to show off.
You can’t let that inspire you,” he said.
Drille added that while it’s important to enjoy life,
artists should balance enjoyment with prudence.
“Enjoy your life, but also think about the future. I
have one or two expensive things, but nothing crazy. The key is moderation,” he
concluded.
