The Nigeria Police Force in Lagos State has arrested
23 suspected cultists and recovered multiple weapons during coordinated
operations across several parts of the state.
According to a statement by Police Public Relations
Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, the raids were carried out on April 17 in areas
including Ikorodu, Lagos Island, Okoko, Ilasan, Ogba, and Iju as part of
intensified efforts to tackle cultism and illegal arms possession.
The operations were conducted under the directive of
the Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, targeting criminal networks linked to
violent activities.
In Ikorodu, four suspects were arrested based on
intelligence reports connecting them to cult groups, particularly the
Buccaneers Confraternity, also known as the Sea Lords. On Lagos Island, nine
suspects were apprehended during a raid on a hideout, while five others were
arrested in Ilasan in connection with the killing of a man identified as
Emmanuel Obioson.
Police also arrested a suspect in Okoko believed to be
affiliated with the Eiye Confraternity, recovering a firearm from him.
Additional arrests were made in Ogba and Iju, where suspects were linked to
illegal gatherings and violent attacks.
Items recovered during the operations include five
locally made pistols, a toy gun, live and spent cartridges, camouflage caps,
and a knife.
Authorities confirmed that victims of related attacks
are currently receiving medical care, while investigations continue.
The police command reiterated its commitment to
eliminating cultism and violent crime in Lagos and urged residents to remain
vigilant and support security agencies by providing timely and useful
information.
