Keir Starmer is facing growing calls to resign following revelations that the appointment of Peter Mandelson as Ambassador to the United States went ahead despite failing a top-level security vetting process.

The controversy escalated after reports showed that officials within the Foreign Office used an uncommon provision to override concerns raised by UK Security Vetting in early 2025.

The fallout has already led to the resignation of senior civil servant Olly Robbins, who stepped down after reportedly losing the Prime Minister’s confidence.

Government minister Darren Jones confirmed that neither Starmer nor the Foreign Secretary were aware of the failed vetting until recently, describing the situation as a serious breakdown in government processes. He added that the Prime Minister was angered to discover the oversight, especially after assuring Parliament that proper procedures had been followed.

Opposition figures have sharply criticized the government’s handling of the issue. Kemi Badenoch accused Starmer of compromising national security, while Ed Davey said the Prime Minister should step down if it is proven he misled the public or lawmakers.

The situation is further complicated by Mandelson’s past association with Jeffrey Epstein, which had previously led to his removal from the diplomatic role in September 2025. New details suggest he may have been granted access to sensitive information despite security concerns.

Authorities are now investigating possible misconduct in public office, including allegations that Mandelson may have shared classified materials during his time in government.

The UK government has pledged to release more details about the vetting process in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, Starmer is expected to address Parliament to clarify the timeline of events and respond to mounting political pressure.
