Manchester City’s defence of their Premier League crown continues to wobble after another frustrating outing that left them sixth on the table, four points outside the top five.

Between them, Liverpool and City have claimed the last eight league titles, but their latest clash underlined why Arsenal now sense an opportunity to finally reclaim the crown. Defensive lapses, wasted chances, and erratic moments defined a contest that never truly reached classic levels despite its late chaos.

Erling Haaland’s struggles in front of goal continued, with the Norwegian managing just one open-play goal in his last 13 matches. His lack of confidence was evident early on when he spurned a golden chance inside two minutes. Bernardo Silva’s incisive pass split the Liverpool defence, but Haaland’s weak effort—under pressure from Milos Kerkez—was comfortably saved by Alisson Becker.

Haaland later fired another attempt straight at Alisson as City registered 10 shots in the first half without finding a breakthrough.

City’s familiar second-half dip resurfaced after the break. Liverpool nearly capitalised just before the hour mark when Hugo Ekitike completely misjudged a free header following a lightning-fast counterattack.

Marc Guehi endured a hostile reception throughout the match after his failed move from Crystal Palace to Liverpool on deadline day, a situation City exploited last month when injuries left them short at centre-back. Guehi was fortunate to escape with only a yellow card after pulling down Mohamed Salah just outside the box.

Controversy followed soon after when Ryan Gravenberch went down under minimal contact, leading to a free-kick that sparked the game’s opening goal.

Dominik Szoboszlai once again showcased his set-piece brilliance, curling a stunning free-kick off the inside of the post and into the net—another spectacular strike at Anfield following his similar effort earlier in the season.

However, the Hungarian midfielder’s night took a dramatic turn. Six minutes from time, he played Silva onside, allowing the City midfielder to volley home Haaland’s headed assist—City’s first second-half league goal of the year.

Moments later, Alisson clattered into Matheus Nunes inside the box, conceding a penalty. Haaland calmly converted from the spot to give City the lead.

Liverpool pushed desperately for an equaliser, forcing a superb save from Gianluigi Donnarumma to deny Alexis Mac Allister’s deflected effort. With Alisson up for a late corner, City thought they had sealed the win when Rayan Cherki rolled the ball into an empty net from near the halfway line.

However, the goal was ruled out after Haaland and Szoboszlai grappled as the ball crossed the line. A free-kick was awarded to City instead, and Szoboszlai was shown a red card in the aftermath.

The chaotic finish summed up a match that highlighted the vulnerabilities of two former champions—leaving Arsenal watching closely as the title race takes yet another twist.
