Armed attackers have killed one person after storming a community in Kwara State, firing sporadically and forcing residents to flee their homes in fear.

The assailants, who were heavily armed, invaded the area and unleashed gunfire, triggering panic among villagers. Several residents escaped into nearby bushes as the attackers rampaged through the community.

The affected settlement shares a boundary with Egbe in Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State, both located in Nigeria’s North-Central region.

The latest incident comes just days after a deadly terrorist attack on Woro community in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, where no fewer than 75 people were killed. The earlier assault also left several houses and properties destroyed.

Confirming the casualty figure, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Kwara State Command, Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, said investigations into the February 3 attack were still ongoing.

“The present toll of casualties from the attack that occurred on the 3rd of February at about 5:30 p.m. is 75,” she said during an appearance on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Friday.

In response to the violence, President Bola Tinubu ordered the immediate deployment of troops to the affected area and strongly condemned the attacks, describing them as inhumane and cowardly.

“I condemn in the strongest terms this cowardly and beastly attack,” Tinubu said after meeting with Kwara State Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq. “The gunmen are heartless for targeting defenceless communities in their doomed campaign of terror.”

The President announced that an army battalion has been deployed to Kaiama Local Government Area under a new military operation, Operation Savannah Shield, aimed at flushing out the attackers and safeguarding vulnerable communities.

The fresh attack has heightened fears among residents, adding to growing concerns over persistent insecurity across several parts of the country.
