The Louis Edem Foundation is preparing to host one of
the biggest women’s basketball tournaments in West Africa, bringing together
top clubs and talented athletes from countries including Nigeria, Ghana, Benin,
Togo, and several neighbouring nations.
The championship is designed not only to showcase
elite women’s basketball talent across the region but also to advance the
foundation’s mission of promoting youth empowerment, education, leadership, and
social transformation through sports.
Speaking ahead of the tournament, former D’Tigers
power forward Louis Edem reaffirmed the foundation’s dedication to creating
opportunities for young people through basketball and educational support,
especially at a time when many Nigerian youths are struggling with unemployment
and economic hardship.
Edem stressed that sports remain a powerful tool for
engaging young people positively, helping them develop discipline, leadership
skills, and pathways to education and professional careers.
Earlier in January 2026, the foundation organised a
successful Women’s Under-18 Basketball Camp in Jos, where young female athletes
from different communities participated in advanced basketball training,
mentorship programmes, and leadership sessions.
At the end of the camp, four outstanding participants
received academic scholarships, highlighting the foundation’s commitment to
combining sports development with access to quality education.
According to Edem, initiatives like these are
essential in addressing the growing challenges facing Nigerian youths. He noted
that sports development programmes can provide hope, empowerment, and valuable
opportunities for self-improvement in a difficult economic climate.
The upcoming Women’s West Africa Basketball
Championship is expected to attract thousands of fans, scouts, media
organisations, corporate sponsors, government officials, and sports
stakeholders from across the continent.
Beyond the competition itself, the event is also
expected to boost regional unity, promote women’s empowerment, encourage youth
participation in sports, and stimulate economic activity in Lagos.
Through its continued investment in grassroots
basketball and educational support, the Louis Edem Foundation is steadily
establishing itself as one of the leading organisations driving youth and
sports development in West Africa.
The foundation has also called on corporate
organisations, government agencies, sports enthusiasts, and the general public
to support the championship as the region celebrates the continued growth of
women’s basketball and youth empowerment through sports.
