Football finance expert Kieran
Maguire has warned that Manchester City could face a massive points deduction
if found guilty of multiple Financial Fair Play (FFP) violations.
Speaking on The Overlap,
Maguire highlighted the Premier League club’s alleged 115 breaches of financial
regulations between 2009 and 2018, which the club has consistently denied. He
suggested that a points deduction could range between 40 and 60, far exceeding
the six- and four-point penalties handed to Everton and Nottingham Forest in
2024 for FFP breaches.
Maguire stressed that relegation
would not be an option, as that falls under the English Football League’s
jurisdiction, meaning the punishment would likely come in the form of a points
deduction. He also indicated the potential for more severe consequences,
including board resignations, comparing the situation to Juventus’ FFP scandal
in Serie A, which forced a club overhaul.
“If the accusations are proven,
corporate fraud issues would require board changes,” Maguire said, noting the
severity of the alleged misconduct and its implications for Premier League
governance and club management.
Maguire has warned that if
Manchester City is found guilty of 115 alleged Financial Fair Play breaches,
the Premier League club could face a points deduction of 40–60 points.
The alleged violations, spanning
2009–2018, dwarf the penalties Everton and Nottingham Forest received in 2024.
Maguire explained that relegation is not possible, meaning the punishment would
be reflected in a points deduction, potentially crippling City’s league
standing.
He also warned of broader
consequences, suggesting that corporate fraud findings could force board
resignations and a club restructure, similar to the sanctions Juventus faced in
Italy’s Serie A. “The board would have to go… there could be a complete
restructure of the club,” Maguire added, emphasizing the gravity of the
allegations.
The case remains under
investigation, with Manchester City denying all wrongdoing and the Premier
League carefully reviewing the claims before reaching a decision.
