Lionel Messi has admitted that not
learning English during his childhood is one of his biggest regrets, despite
his stellar football career.
Speaking on the podcast Miro de
Atrás, the 2022 World Cup winner reflected on moments where his lack of
English made him feel “half ignorant,” especially when interacting with global
figures.
“To not have learned English as a
boy… I deeply regret it,” Messi said. “I always thought, ‘What an idiot, how I
wasted my time.’ Today, that’s what I tell my children: the importance of
having a good education, studying, and being prepared.”
Messi, who joined Inter Miami CF in
2023 after a stint at Paris Saint-Germain F.C., emphasized that football has
been an invaluable teacher, offering life lessons, strong values, and the chance
to form lifelong bonds while discovering new places.
Lionel Messi revealed on the podcast
Miro de Atrás that not learning English as a child remains a personal
regret, despite his achievements in football.
The Inter Miami star explained that
not knowing the language sometimes made him feel “half ignorant” when meeting
influential personalities, and he now stresses to his children the importance
of education and preparation.
Messi noted that while football
allowed him to reach the top, it also provided invaluable lessons, teaching
strong values, creating lifelong friendships, and offering experiences that
extend beyond the pitch.
“I was able to do everything and
reach the top in football, but along the way there are many experiences and
lessons learned,” Messi said, highlighting the role of sport as both a career
and a life teacher.
