Bayern Munich legend Manuel Neuer has extended his
stay at the club after signing a new one-year contract that will keep him at
the Allianz Arena until 2027.
The 40-year-old goalkeeper was previously set to
become a free agent at the end of the season, but the fresh agreement means he
is now set to begin his 16th campaign with the German champions.
Neuer described the extension as a “clear decision,”
adding that he still believes Bayern’s current squad has the quality to compete
with and defeat any team.
The veteran goalkeeper has enjoyed an outstanding
career since joining Bayern Munich from Schalke in 2011. During his time at the
club, he has won several major honours, including two UEFA Champions League
titles and a record 13 Bundesliga trophies.
That Bundesliga record is matched only by his longtime
teammate, Thomas Müller.
Neuer, who won the 2014 FIFA World Cup with Germany,
is widely regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers in football history. He
also remains the most recent goalkeeper to finish in the top three of the
Ballon d’Or rankings, achieving the feat in 2014.
The 2026-27 season could bring some changes to
Bayern’s goalkeeping setup, with reports suggesting Neuer may have his playing
time managed to support the development of backup goalkeeper Jonas Urbig.
Bayern have also extended the contract of third-choice
goalkeeper Sven Ulreich for another year, ensuring more stability in the
department.
Despite his age, Neuer continues to perform at a high
level. His recent Man of the Match display in Bayern’s Champions League
quarter-final victory over Real Madrid further underlined his importance to the
team.
Neuer retired from international football in 2024
after earning 124 caps for Germany, but he remains a key figure for Bayern as
the club prepares for another title-chasing season.
