Lautaro Martinez fired Inter Milan six points clear at
the top of Serie A with the decisive goal in a hard-fought 1–0 victory away to
Udinese on Saturday, while Napoli kept the pressure on with a narrow win over
Sassuolo.
Martinez struck in the 20th minute at the Dacia Arena,
expertly poking home to extend Inter’s unbeaten league run to nine matches
ahead of Tuesday’s crucial Champions League clash with Arsenal.
Inter dominated proceedings from start to finish,
pressing Udinese high up the pitch in line with coach Cristian Chivu’s tactical
philosophy.
“What we’re showing on the pitch is a reflection of
the players’ desire,” Chivu told DAZN. “It’s not easy to change habits. We
defend high, press from the forwards, and it comes from the hard work of the
midfielders and the courage of the defenders to hold a high line.”
The Nerazzurri have now taken 25 points from a
possible 27 since losing the Milan derby in late November, once again
displaying a ruthlessness against lower-ranked sides that has often eluded
title rivals AC Milan and Napoli.
While Milan and Napoli have dropped points in matches
they were expected to win, Inter have shown consistency against lesser
opposition. However, questions remain over their performances against elite
teams — a weakness set to be tested when Premier League leaders Arsenal visit
the San Siro in the Champions League.
Inter opened the European campaign with four straight
wins but followed that run with two defeats, leaving their place in the
knockout stages in doubt.
Napoli End Draw Streak but Injury Woes
Deepen
Napoli remained six points behind Inter in third place
after edging Sassuolo 1–0 at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium, thanks to an
early strike from Stanislav Lobotka.
The Slovakian midfielder scored his first club goal in
over three years in the seventh minute, smashing home a rebound to end a goal
drought dating back to the opening day of Napoli’s title-winning 2022/23
season.
The goal proved decisive in what was otherwise an
evenly contested encounter.
The reigning champions sit level on 43 points with
second-placed AC Milan, who host Lecce on Sunday, and remain unbeaten in the
league since the opening day of the season.
Napoli’s focus now shifts to the Champions League,
where Antonio Conte’s side face a crucial trip to Denmark to take on FC
Copenhagen, with both teams battling to avoid slipping into the elimination
places.
Injury concerns continue to mount for Conte, with key
players Romelu Lukaku, Kevin De Bruyne and Andre-Frank Anguissa already
sidelined. Matters worsened on Saturday as Eljif Elmas, Amir Rrahmani and
Matteo Politano all picked up knocks.
Conte was visibly frustrated late in the match when
Politano went down clutching his hamstring after a speculative effort,
requiring immediate treatment after the final whistle.
“We’ll know more in the coming days,” said Conte’s
assistant Cristian Stellini. “Elmas felt dizzy due to flu symptoms, but apart
from that we don’t have any clear news. The players were excellent despite the
difficulties, which we don’t know how long will last.”
Juventus Chase from Fourth
Juventus, currently fourth and 10 points adrift of
Inter, continue to show signs of improvement under Luciano Spalletti and are
heavy favourites heading into Saturday’s late kick-off away at Cagliari.
