Arsenal stretched their lead at the top of the Premier
League to seven points on Saturday despite being held to a frustrating 0–0 draw
by a resilient Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.
The Gunners had the opportunity to move nine points
clear after Manchester City’s 2–0 defeat to local rivals Manchester United
earlier in the day, but a lacklustre first-half display ultimately proved
costly.
Forest produced a disciplined and determined
performance, particularly before the break, frustrating Mikel Arteta’s side and
boosting their own hopes of survival in the top flight.
Despite the dropped points, Arsenal remain well placed
to end their 22-year wait for a league title.
Forest manager Sean Dyche had publicly criticised his
players following their FA Cup exit to League Two side Wrexham last weekend,
but he received the response he demanded as his team battled hard to move five
points clear of the relegation zone.
Manchester City’s four-game winless league run since
the start of the year has eased pressure on Arsenal at the summit, though
consecutive goalless draws against Liverpool and Forest have prevented the
leaders from opening a more commanding advantage.
Third-placed Aston Villa could cut the gap at the top
to four points should they defeat Everton on Sunday.
Arsenal struggled to create clear chances early on and
failed to register a single shot on target in the first half. The visitors
improved after the interval following a series of attacking substitutions by
Arteta.
Leandro Trossard was introduced at half-time, while
Bukayo Saka, Mikel Merino and Gabriel Jesus all came off the bench before the
hour mark to add urgency and creativity.
Saka went closest to breaking the deadlock, but his
looping header from Declan Rice’s cross was superbly tipped over the bar by
Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels.
Merino also squandered a golden opportunity, failing
to direct Rice’s dangerous free-kick on target.
In the end, Arsenal had to settle for a point but
could take comfort in their defensive solidity, recording an 11th clean sheet
in 22 league matches to edge further clear at the top.
