Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has commended
security agencies for their efforts in combating crime following the recovery
of a large cache of arms and the arrest of suspects linked to several violent
attacks across the state.
Speaking during an inspection of the recovered weapons
at the Enugu headquarters of the Department of State Services (DSS), Mbah
revealed that some of the suspects in custody were connected to major security
breaches, including attacks that claimed the lives of security personnel in the
state.
The recovered items include 17 AK-47 rifles, one
General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG), a rocket-propelled rifle, a tear-gas gun,
12 AK-47 magazines, two hand grenades, three tear-gas canisters, and 1,071
rounds of ammunition. Security operatives also seized various uniforms and four
lanyards.
The governor praised the dedication and vigilance of
security personnel, describing the operation as a victory for hard work and
commitment to duty.
Mbah recalled that after the deadly attacks on
security officers in December last year, the state government placed bounties
on the perpetrators. He noted that while some suspects had already been
arrested, those recently apprehended were individuals who had remained on the
run.
Reaffirming his administration’s stance against
criminality, the governor warned that Enugu would remain hostile to criminals
and vowed that anyone involved in crime would eventually be tracked down and
brought to justice.
He expressed satisfaction that the state’s investments
in modern security technology and infrastructure were yielding positive
results, enabling security agencies to identify and dismantle criminal networks
more effectively.
According to him, the combination of advanced
technology and dedicated security personnel has helped prevent numerous crimes
before they could be carried out, contributing to improved safety across the
state.
Mbah also urged landlords and property owners to
thoroughly screen prospective tenants, stressing that ignorance would not
absolve anyone from responsibility if their properties were used for criminal
activities. He maintained that the government would continue prosecuting
negligent property owners and demolishing buildings linked to violent crimes.
The governor further commended President Bola Tinubu
for initiatives aimed at strengthening national security, including support for
the proposed state police system and the rehabilitation of security training
institutions across the country.
He noted that efforts were underway to upgrade
training facilities for security agencies, a move he said would improve
professionalism and standardize security training nationwide.
Mbah concluded with a warning to criminal elements,
insisting that Enugu State would continue to pursue and prosecute anyone
involved in unlawful activities, regardless of how long it takes.
