Michael B. Jordan has won the Academy Award for
Best Actor for his performance in the film Sinners, where he
portrayed twin brothers Stack and Smoke.
During his acceptance speech, Jordan expressed deep
gratitude and reflected on the significance of the moment, saying simply, “God
is good.” He also thanked the film’s director, Ryan Coogler, praising him for
believing in the project and “betting on the culture.”
Jordan commended Coogler for giving him the creative
space to fully embody the characters. He described the filmmaker as an
incredible collaborator and friend, saying he was honored to work with him
again.
The film Sinners had an impressive night at the
Academy Awards, receiving a record 16 nominations and winning four
Oscars.
Coogler took home the award for Best Original
Screenplay, while cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw made history by
becoming the first woman to win the Academy Award for Best Cinematography.
She is also the first person of African American or Filipino descent to receive
the honor.
Set in 1932 in the Mississippi Delta, the
vampire-themed drama explores Black culture, resilience, and survival during
the Jim Crow era. The film was written and directed by Coogler and
produced by him alongside his wife Zinzi Coogler and longtime
collaborator Sev Ohanian.
Jordan and Coogler have a long creative partnership
that began with the 2013 film Fruitvale Station, in which Jordan
portrayed Oscar Grant, a young man killed by a BART police officer in 2009.
They later collaborated again on the blockbuster Black Panther and its
sequel before reuniting for Sinners.
With this win, Jordan becomes only the sixth Black
actor to receive the Best Actor Oscar, joining legends such as
Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington, Jamie Foxx, Forest Whitaker, and Will Smith.
Meanwhile, Halle Berry remains the only Black woman to have won the Best
Actress category.
Earlier in the ceremony, Sinners also won Best
Original Screenplay, marking only the second time a Black writer has
won the category after Jordan Peele for his 2017 film Get Out.
Another major win came from composer Ludwig Göransson,
who received the Oscar for Best Original Score for his work on Sinners.
During his speech, he praised Coogler as one of the “greatest storytellers
of our time.” The award marks Göransson’s second win for a collaboration
with the director, following his previous Oscar for Black Panther.
The success of Sinners marks another milestone
in the ongoing partnership between Jordan and Coogler, reinforcing their
influence in modern Hollywood storytelling.
