Michael Carrick is close to being confirmed as
Manchester United’s permanent head coach after reportedly being offered a
two-year contract by the club.
Talks are currently ongoing between Carrick and United
over a new deal, with his existing contract set to expire at the end of the
season. The proposed agreement is expected to run for two years, with an option
to extend for a further year.
Negotiations are also taking place with members of
Carrick’s coaching team. Steve Holland, Jonathan Woodgate, Jonny Evans, and
Travis Binnion are all expected to sign new contracts to remain at Old
Trafford.
Carrick has impressed since taking charge, guiding
Manchester United to 10 wins in 15 Premier League matches. His strong run of
results reportedly led the club’s football leadership team to recommend that he
be appointed on a permanent basis.
United’s chief executive, Omar Berrada, and director
of football, Jason Wilcox, are said to be pleased with Carrick’s work and want
him to continue leading the team.
Speaking on Friday, Carrick hinted that a decision on
his future would be made soon.
“There’s two games to go; apart from that there’s not
much else to say,” Carrick said with a smile. “The situation is pretty clear
for us all. Same as in preparing for the game. It’s a unique football club, a
special club.”
Carrick also expressed pride at returning to
Manchester United, a club he previously represented as a player.
“Immensely proud to have come back and been a part of
it, as a supporter and ex-player. As a pure supporter, to be in a position to
come back and help and move forward was important,” he said.
He added that helping the club make progress and
return to the Champions League was a major achievement.
“To make a big step, and back in the Champions League
is good. We’re happy with the work we’ve done so far,” Carrick stated.
Whether or not the contract is officially signed
before the final home game, Carrick is expected to address Manchester United
supporters after Sunday’s match.
He said thanking the fans was important because of the
role they have played throughout the season.
“That’s important anyway — the supporters are a
massive part of this club,” Carrick said. “We thank them for the season and the
support, the last four months for me personally. The players have felt that
connection.”
