Former presidential aspirant and publisher, Dele
Momodu, has identified former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, 2023 Labour Party
presidential candidate Peter Obi, and former Rivers State governor Rotimi
Amaechi as the leading contenders for the African Democratic Congress (ADC)
presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 general election.
“Today, if you ask me, in ADC there are prominent
potential candidates. Number one on the list will be Alhaji Atiku Abubakar
because he was a vice president for eight years and has played at the highest
level of governance. He started contesting for the presidency as far back as
1993 when he stepped down for Chief Abiola,” Momodu said.
He described Amaechi as another strong contender,
citing his extensive political experience.
“The next person will be Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, who
served as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly for eight years,
governor for eight years, and minister for eight years,” he added.
Momodu also listed Peter Obi among the leading
figures, noting his record as a two-term governor of Anambra State.
“Then we will go to Peter Obi, who was also a governor
for two terms,” he said.
Momodu urged members of the ADC to put aside personal
interests and work collectively to unseat President Bola Tinubu, whom he
accused of steering the country toward a one-party system.
“We need the cooperation of everybody. That is why we
call it a coalition. It is not a one-man thing, and Nigeria does not recognise
independent candidacy,” he said.
Atiku, who served as vice president between 1999 and
2007 under the PDP, left the party last year and later aligned with the ADC.
Peter Obi, who contested the 2023 presidential election on the platform of the
Labour Party, also recently defected to the ADC. In 2019, Obi was Atiku’s
running mate on the PDP ticket, which lost to former President Muhammadu
Buhari.
Amaechi, a former Minister of Transportation, was
among the early entrants into the ADC and has emerged as a vocal critic of
President Tinubu’s administration.
The three politicians were among the key figures who
recently unveiled the ADC as the official platform for the opposition coalition
ahead of the 2027 elections.
