Nigeria has secured re-election into the Council of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), returning to the global maritime decision-making body after a 14-year absence.

The announcement was made on Saturday by President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information & Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. Nigeria was re-elected into Category C of the IMO Council for the 2026–2027 biennium during the organisation’s General Assembly in London on Friday, November 28.

Tinubu: “A Strong Affirmation of Nigeria’s Maritime Influence”

President Tinubu described the victory as a major boost to Nigeria’s maritime profile, saying it reflects global confidence in the country’s commitment to:

  • Maritime safety and security
  • Environmental protection
  • Rules-based shipping operations
  • Strengthening global maritime governance

Tinubu commended the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola, officials of the ministry, NIMASA, and Nigeria’s diplomats for the “strategic engagement and professionalism” that led to the successful bid.

Boost for Nigeria’s Blue Economy Agenda

The President noted that the new IMO Council mandate aligns with his administration’s vision to:

  • Unlock the full potential of Nigeria’s blue economy
  • Expand maritime infrastructure
  • Strengthen anti-piracy operations
  • Position Nigeria as a leading regional shipping hub

He further assured IMO member states that Nigeria will remain a reliable partner in promoting safer seas, cleaner oceans, efficient maritime transport, and fair global maritime regulation.

Nigeria Pledges Active Global Contribution

Tinubu expressed gratitude to all countries that supported Nigeria’s candidacy, pledging that the nation will fully justify the renewed trust through strong leadership and active participation in the IMO’s work.
