Nigeria has secured re-election into the Council of
the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), returning to the global maritime
decision-making body after a 14-year absence.
The announcement was made on Saturday by President
Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information & Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
Nigeria was re-elected into Category C of the IMO Council for the 2026–2027
biennium during the organisation’s General Assembly in London on Friday,
November 28.

President Tinubu described the victory as a major
boost to Nigeria’s maritime profile, saying it reflects global confidence in
the country’s commitment to:

Nigeria’s diplomats for the “strategic engagement and professionalism” that led
to the successful bid.
