The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has announced
that Nigeria will take over the chairmanship of the Intergovernmental Group
of Twenty-Four (G-24) on November 1, 2025.
The disclosure was made in a post on the CBN’s official
X handle on Wednesday, marking a major milestone in the country’s
growing participation in global economic governance.
The announcement follows the federal government’s
2024 call for stronger international investment and trade partnerships
among G-24 member nations.
Established in 1971, the G-24 brings
together developing countries to coordinate positions on
international monetary policy and development financing, ensuring their
collective voice is recognized in global economic decision-making.
According to the CBN, Nigeria’s work programme
as chair will be unveiled after broad consultations with member states.
Speaking at the group’s recent meeting, CBN
Governor Olayemi Cardoso, representing the Minister of Finance and
Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, reaffirmed Nigeria’s
commitment to strengthening the G-24’s influence as a driver of
inclusive dialogue and reform.
“Our focus will be on sustaining momentum in areas
that matter most to our members,” Cardoso said. “We look forward to working
collaboratively to promote inclusive growth, equity, and global stability.”
He added that Nigeria is determined to ensure the
G-24 remains a powerful platform for representing the shared interests
of emerging and developing economies.
