The Super Eagles of Nigeria are set to clash with Gabon
in the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup African play-offs, following
their emphatic 4–0 victory over the Benin Republic on Tuesday.
The win secured Nigeria’s spot in the play-offs after
the conclusion of the CAF qualifying group stage. Gabon, on their part,
clinched second place in Group F after defeating Burundi 2–0.
South Africa topped the group with 18 points, while
Nigeria followed closely with 17 points, sealing their progression to the next
stage.
Elsewhere, Ivory Coast claimed the top spot in their
group after beating Kenya, while DR Congo edged Sudan 1–0 to qualify as
runners-up behind Senegal in Group B. Cameroon also advanced after finishing
second in Group D, behind Cape Verde.
According to a statement released by the Nigeria
Football Federation (NFF) on Tuesday, the CAF Play-offs will see Nigeria take
on Gabon’s Panthers in the first semi-final on Thursday, November 13, followed
by Cameroon vs. DR Congo in the second semi-final on Friday, November 14.
The two winners will meet in the final on Sunday,
November 16, with the champion earning a place in the Intercontinental
Play-offs, scheduled to hold in the Mexican cities of Guadalajara and Monterrey
in March 2026.
At the international stage, six teams will compete for
two remaining World Cup spots. They include Africa’s representative, Bolivia, New
Caledonia, the winner of the Asian play-off between Iraq and the UAE, and two
teams from the CONCACAF region—Jamaica, Costa Rica, or Panama.
