The Federal Government has confirmed the passing of
Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to Algeria, Mohammed Mahmud Lele, who died at
the age of 50.
The announcement was made by the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs in a statement released in Abuja on Wednesday, April 22. The statement,
signed by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, disclosed that Lele
died in the early hours of April 19, 2026, in Ankara after a prolonged illness.
The ministry described the late diplomat as a
committed public servant who contributed significantly to Nigeria’s foreign
service. Until his passing, he served as Director overseeing the Middle East
and Gulf Division within the ministry.
Lele, a career diplomat, had recently been appointed
by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as ambassador-designate to Algeria, following
confirmation by the Nigerian Senate.
Born in Gamawa, Bauchi State, in 1976, he studied
Economics at Bayero University Kano and went on to serve in various Nigerian
diplomatic missions, including postings in Berlin, Lomé, and Riyadh.
According to the ministry, Lele was widely respected
for his intellect, strategic thinking, and dedication to advancing Nigeria’s
foreign policy goals.
He was laid to rest in Kano on Wednesday in accordance
with Islamic rites. The ministry extended its condolences to his family,
colleagues, and the government and people of Bauchi State, praying for strength
for those he left behind.
