The Federal Government has assured Nigerians that
there are no immediate plans to increase electricity tariffs beyond the current
rates, despite recent speculation about a possible price hike.
Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, gave the assurance
during a media briefing in Abuja on Friday, stating that the Tinubu
administration's focus remains on improving electricity supply, expanding
access to power, and ensuring consumers are billed only for the electricity
they actually use.
According to the minister, the country has recorded
noticeable improvements in power generation, consistently producing 5,000
megawatts (MW) of electricity over the past two weeks.
"We are already witnessing encouraging
improvements in electricity generation. Over the course of the last two weeks,
we have consistently generated 5,000MW," Tegbe said.
Addressing concerns over electricity pricing, he
stressed that the administration has no policy to introduce another tariff
increase at this time.
"There is no policy by this administration to
increase electricity tariffs beyond the current level. Our priority is not a
tariff increase in the immediate term. Our priority is service improvement,
universal metering, and ensuring Nigerians pay only for the electricity they
actually consume," he added.
Tegbe said the Federal Government's long-term
objective is to provide reliable and stable electricity to households and
businesses across the country.
"Our ambition is clear: reliable electricity that
powers our homes," the minister stated.
His remarks come amid widespread public debate over a
possible increase in electricity tariffs, following comments by President Bola
Tinubu's Special Adviser on Power Infrastructure, Sadiq Wanka, which sparked
concerns among consumers.
The proposed tariff adjustment has faced strong
opposition from many Nigerian electricity consumers, who have expressed worries
about the rising cost of living and the affordability of electricity.
