The Nigerian entertainment industry has been thrown
into mourning following the death of veteran Nollywood actor and respected
academic, Professor Patrick Okoye.
Popularly known by his screen name, “Energy,” the
renowned actor reportedly passed away in the early hours of Thursday, May 28,
2026.
News of his death was announced through a statement
shared on his official Instagram page on Friday, leaving fans, colleagues, and
members of the academic community in shock.
Beyond his successful acting career, Professor Okoye
was a distinguished scholar and educator. He served as a lecturer and professor
in the Department of Theatre Arts and Film Studies, Faculty of Arts, at Nnamdi
Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Anambra State, where he contributed
significantly to the development of theatre and film studies.
During his career in Nollywood, Okoye featured in
several notable productions, earning admiration for his talent and memorable
performances. Some of his popular works include Midnight Love, Old
School, Finding a Wife, The Lion, The Jagaban, and Over
My Dead Body, among others.
His passing marks a significant loss to both the
Nigerian film industry and the academic community, where he was widely
respected for his dedication, professionalism, and mentorship.
Tributes have continued to pour in from colleagues,
students, fans, and well-wishers who remember him for his contributions to
entertainment and education.
