Members of the board of the Nigeria Wrestling
Federation (NWF), alongside coaches, have praised the Comptroller-General of
the Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi, for his remarkable support toward
athletes participating in the ongoing wrestling competition.
The commendation was given during the official
weigh-in session held at the Games Village in Bayelsa Palm on Thursday, March
26.
Speaking at the venue, NWF Vice President Christopher
Ankpila, along with North-East representative Umar Abubakar, highlighted the
high standard of accommodation and feeding provided for both athletes and
officials.
Ankpila described the arrangements as top-notch,
noting that such quality had never been experienced before at similar events.
He added that the facilities and overall welfare package reflect an
international standard, leaving participants impressed and satisfied.
He also expressed appreciation to the Customs boss and
acknowledged the effort behind ensuring athletes’ comfort, stating that such
initiatives should not be taken for granted.
Umar Abubakar, who also represents the North West on
the board, echoed similar sentiments, describing the gesture as unprecedented.
He pointed out that athletes are visibly excited due to the provision of
quality meals and comfortable lodging, calling it the best arrangement
witnessed since the competition began over a decade ago.
Also sharing his thoughts, former African wrestling
champion Joe Oziti commended the initiative. The Delta State Wrestling coach
described the event as one of the most well-organised competitions held in
Bayelsa, emphasizing the impact of free meals and improved accommodation on
athlete morale.
He concluded by expressing gratitude on behalf of
participants, noting that the improved welfare has contributed greatly to the
positive atmosphere at the event.
