An Osun State High Court sitting in Ile-Ife has sentenced 30-year-old labourer Taiwo Agboola to death for killing 62-year-old Jadesola Olubayo at a palm oil processing factory.

Agboola was said to have killed the deceased on October 11, 2023, at a palm oil processing site in Amula River, Olokemeji Village, Ifetedo, Ife South Local Government Area of Osun State.

He was arraigned on three counts: attempted rape, indecent assault on a female, and murder, contrary to Sections 359, 360, and 319(1) of the Criminal Code Cap. 34 Laws of Osun State, 2002.

During the trial, the court heard that Latifat Adeyemo, Olubayo’s granddaughter, accompanied the deceased to the factory, where she alleged that Agboola suddenly attacked. Adeyemo told the court that she and her grandmother tried to escape but were overpowered, and that when she returned to the scene, she said Agboola attacked the deceased with stones and a stick, causing her death on the spot. Adeyemo also told the court that Agboola initially escaped but was later apprehended near the scene and handed over to the police.

Delivering judgment on Friday, May 22, 2026, Justice Adedapo Adeniji said the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and found Agboola guilty of murder.

The judge sentenced Agboola to: - 14 years imprisonment for the count of attempted rape, - 2 years imprisonment for indecent assault, and - death for the murder count.

Justice Adeniji also noted that Agboola first appeared in court on November 7, 2024. The prosecution called four witnesses, while Agboola testified in his defence without calling any other witness

In a separate development, an Osun State High Court report also cited that in April, the Gombe State High Court sentenced an 18-year-old, Mustapha Isah, to death by hanging for culpable homicide after finding that the prosecution proved his case beyond reasonable doubt.
