The Benue State Police Command has arrested a
23-year-old suspect, Abdullahi Usman, in connection with the killing of
Professor Gabriel Saawua Nyityo, a lecturer at Moses Orshio Adasu University,
Makurdi, formerly known as Benue State University.
Professor Nyityo, a respected History scholar, was
reportedly killed alongside his younger brother, Iorngee John Nyityo, during an
attack at their residence in the Adaka community of Makurdi Local Government
Area in the early hours of Wednesday, July 8, 2026.
Confirming the development in a statement issued on
Thursday, July 9, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, said
officers attached to the 'D' Division responded to a distress call from the
Adaka area, where they discovered the bodies of the two victims.
According to the police, Professor Gabriel Saawua
Nyityo, 58, and his 19-year-old younger brother were allegedly killed by armed
assailants.
Edet disclosed that Abdullahi Usman, a 23-year-old
resident of Awe Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, has been arrested in
connection with the incident.
The police spokesperson added that investigations are
ongoing to apprehend other suspects believed to have been involved in the
attack.
