The Nigeria Police Force has paraded four suspects, including two nephrologists, over an alleged organ-harvesting syndicate operating in Nasarawa State.

According to details from a police briefing reported by Channels Television, the suspects allegedly targeted vulnerable young men and lured them into donating their kidneys in exchange for payments that were reportedly far below the value of the organs.

Police investigators alleged that one victim received about $1,250, while another was reportedly paid N7 million after undergoing a kidney removal procedure.

Authorities further alleged that the syndicate relied on forged documents to facilitate the procedures and conceal the identities of some of the victims.

The documents reportedly included birth certificates, affidavits, consent letters and identification papers, which investigators believe were used to manipulate records surrounding the alleged donations.

During the police briefing, one of the alleged victims recounted how he was reportedly deceived into agreeing to donate his kidney.

A representative of Wellington Clinic, where some of the procedures allegedly took place, also spoke during the briefing. The representative claimed that the facility merely provided the platform for the surgeries and was unaware of the alleged criminal activities, including the purported alteration of donors’ identities.

The police said investigations are continuing, with efforts underway to uncover the full extent of the alleged operation and identify other individuals who may have been involved.

Authorities also said they would continue working to locate and apprehend other suspected members of the syndicate as the investigation progresses.
