VeryDarkMan Fires Back at Falana Over NBA Conference Invitation

Social media critic Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has responded sharply to human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Femi Falana following criticism of his invitation to the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Annual General Conference in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Falana had criticised the NBA’s decision to feature VDM as a speaker on a national security panel titled “Known Gunmen or Unknown Gunmen.”

Speaking during an interview with Channels Television, the legal practitioner questioned VDM’s suitability for a discussion of such importance, arguing that panels addressing national security should feature individuals with demonstrable expertise in the country’s security architecture.

Falana also argued that NBA conferences should primarily promote intellectual engagement and professional discourse rather than entertainment.

Responding to the criticism, VDM accused Falana and other members of the legal profession of exhibiting classism, suggesting that their real objection was the presence of someone from an ordinary background at a prestigious gathering traditionally associated with members of the elite.

According to VDM, his experience dealing with security-related issues gives him a perspective that should not be dismissed simply because he is not a conventional security expert.

He also questioned the effectiveness of some recognised security professionals, particularly those involved in policies concerning the rehabilitation and reintegration of suspected terrorists.

VDM argued that security issues should concern everyone and said practical experience should be considered alongside academic or professional credentials.

Turning his attention to the legal profession, the social media critic challenged the description of law as a “noble profession,” arguing that public confidence in Nigeria’s justice system has declined.

He questioned why many Nigerians increasingly turn to social media personalities and activists when seeking justice rather than relying solely on the courts.

VDM further accused some lawyers and other professionals of failing to speak out strongly enough on issues affecting Nigerians, including the reported abduction of judges and allegations of corruption within the justice system.

He maintained that his record of activism and interventions in various cases demonstrated his contribution to society, while challenging his critics to point to similar achievements.

VDM also defended his invitation to the NBA conference, arguing that discussions about national security should not be restricted to established professionals and that ordinary citizens who have experienced insecurity firsthand also have valuable perspectives to contribute.

The controversy has generated debate over the NBA’s decision to invite VDM, with the disagreement highlighting broader questions about expertise, professional gatekeeping, public participation and the role of social media activists in discussions on national issues.
