The Oyo State Police Command has re-arrested a
suspected kidnapper who previously escaped from police custody in the state.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, March 18, the
Police Public Relations Officer, Ayanlade Olayinka, confirmed that the suspect
was apprehended late on March 17, 2026, at about 11:30 p.m.
According to the police, operatives attached to the
Ojongbodu Area Command arrested the suspect during a routine stop-and-search
operation at Irepo Junction in the Ojongbodu area of Oyo.
The suspect, identified as Ayomide Kareem, 25, was
described as acting suspiciously while trekking in the area, prompting officers
to stop and question him. Further checks revealed he was the same individual
who had escaped from custody at the Jobele Division on March 10, 2026, in
connection with a kidnapping case.
Police authorities said Kareem is currently in custody
and assisting with ongoing investigations.
The Command noted that his earlier escape was linked
to the unprofessional conduct of certain officers, who have since been detained
and are undergoing internal disciplinary proceedings.
Following the incident, the Commissioner of Police,
Femi Haruna, ordered an intensive manhunt that ultimately led to the suspect’s
re-arrest.
The case had earlier sparked protests within the
community, prompting the police to take corrective measures, including the
redeployment of the Divisional Police Officer at Jobele Division and other
steps aimed at strengthening accountability and professionalism.
The Command reassured residents of its commitment to
maintaining security and ensuring that all criminal suspects are brought to
justice.
