London, England
— Liverpool’s Premier League woes deepened on Saturday as Brentford
sealed a 3–2 victory at the Gtech Community Stadium, leaving the defending
champions’ title hopes in tatters.
Goals from Dango Ouattara, Kevin Schade,
and Igor Thiago fired the Bees to an impressive win, lifting them to 10th
place in the table. Meanwhile, Liverpool dropped to sixth,
potentially seven points behind leaders Arsenal by Sunday, as their
title defence continues to unravel.
The defeat marks Liverpool’s fifth loss in six
matches across all competitions, despite manager Arne Slot having
spent a Premier League record £450 million ($600 million) in the summer
transfer window.
Brentford’s Set-Piece Brilliance
Brentford’s trademark long throw-ins,
orchestrated by Michael Kayode, proved decisive. In the 18th minute, Kristoffer
Ajer flicked on a throw, allowing Ouattara to volley home the opener.
Liverpool briefly rallied but wasted key chances, with
Florian Wirtz firing wide from close range. Brentford doubled their lead
when Mikkel Damsgaard threaded a precise pass to Schade, who
outpaced Ibrahima Konaté before finishing coolly past Giorgi
Mamardashvili.
Liverpool’s Defensive Collapse
Liverpool’s defensive struggles persisted — the Reds
have now conceded at least twice in six of their nine league games this
season.
Left-back Milos Kerkez, signed for £40 million from Bournemouth,
endured another tough outing but managed to pull one back deep into first-half
stoppage time, converting Conor Bradley’s cross.
Brentford, furious over the extra added time, regained
control after a VAR review upgraded a free-kick to a penalty following Virgil
van Dijk’s foul on Ouattara inside the box. Thiago calmly sent
Mamardashvili the wrong way to restore the two-goal cushion.
Too Little, Too Late
Mohamed Salah,
returning from injury, saw one effort blocked by former Liverpool defender Sepp
van den Berg, but finally ended his six-game goal drought with a
superb 89th-minute strike, smashing in Dominik Szoboszlai’s cross off
the underside of the bar.
However, the late goal was not enough to rescue Slot’s
struggling side, whose morale has plummeted since a turbulent summer rebuild
and the emotional loss of Diogo Jota in a car accident in July.
Liverpool must now regroup quickly, with growing
pressure on Arne Slot to restore cohesion and confidence before their next
league fixture.
