Birnin Kebbi, Nigeria
— The Kebbi State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has
rejected the adoption of former Minister of Special Duties, Kabiru Tanimu
Turaki, as the party’s consensus candidate for the position of National
Chairman.
The rejection was made known in a communiqué issued
after an emergency meeting of the state chapter held in Birnin Kebbi
on Saturday.
Reading the communiqué, the State Publicity Secretary,
Sani Dododo, said the Kebbi PDP aligned itself with the position of
other North-West stakeholders who insisted that each state should have
the right to nominate and deliberate on candidates for regional representation
in accordance with the party’s zoning arrangements.
“Kabiru Tanimu has never consulted the Kebbi State
chapter of the party about his intention to contest. He has not been involved
in any of the party’s activities in the state,” Dododo stated.
“At no time, not a day, not a minute, not even a
second did Kabiru Tanimu visit Kebbi to seek support or consult any stakeholder
or elder of the party,” he added.
Dododo further emphasized that the decision by PDP
governors to adopt Turaki as consensus candidate was taken without the input
or consent of the Kebbi chapter and, therefore, had been “totally
rejected.”
The statement reaffirmed the chapter’s support for the
collective stance of North-West PDP leaders that the right to nominate
candidates should reside within the individual state chapters, in line with the
principles of internal democracy and the party’s zoning system.
The rejection follows an earlier announcement by Northern
PDP stakeholders, who had endorsed Turaki as the consensus candidate
for the national chairmanship position ahead of the party’s forthcoming national
elective convention.
Following a closed-door meeting in Abuja on
Wednesday, Governor Umar Fintiri of Adamawa State announced the
endorsement, clarifying that the decision would not prevent other aspirants
from contesting.
That meeting was attended by several prominent PDP
figures, including the governors of Adamawa, Bauchi, Zamfara, and Plateau
States; former Senate President Bukola Saraki; Senator Abba Moro;
the PDP National Chairman, Umar Damagum; and other northern leaders.
The PDP national elective convention is
scheduled to hold in Ibadan, Oyo State, on November 15 and 16,
where new members of the National Working Committee (NWC) will be
elected to lead the party into the 2027 general elections.
