Nigeria has recorded an 81 per cent reduction in
terror-related deaths since 2015, according to the Presidency.
In a statement posted on its official X (formerly
Twitter) account on Sunday, the Presidency attributed the sharp decline to
improved counter-insurgency operations and stronger collaboration between
security agencies and local communities.
It revealed that over 13,000 terrorists were
neutralised in the past year, while more than 124,000 fighters and their
dependents have surrendered to authorities.
The statement also noted that over 2.1 million
internally displaced persons (IDPs) have returned to their communities,
with reconstruction efforts ongoing in previously affected areas under the Federal
Government’s Resettlement Scheme for Persons Impacted by Conflict.
Enhanced Security Operations
The Presidency explained that since 2023, the Federal
Government has intensified joint security efforts that led to the arrest,
elimination, and conviction of several terrorists and insurgents, including
those responsible for some of the most notorious attacks on Nigerian soil.
“Since 2024, over 124 terrorists and insurgents have
been successfully convicted,” the statement said.
“Others — including members of the Ansaru leadership and those responsible for
the Owo Church bombing (2022) and Yelwata (Benue) reprisal
attacks — are currently facing trial.”
Quoting President Bola Tinubu, the statement
reaffirmed that “the security of Nigeria is non-negotiable.”
Multi-Layered Security Measures
According to the Presidency, several strategic
measures are being implemented to consolidate national security gains. These
include:
It added that the Federal Government remains committed
to protecting lives and safeguarding Nigeria’s sovereignty, while
restoring lasting peace across conflict-affected regions.
