The Governing Council of the Federal University of Education, Kontagora (FUEK) has appointed Professor Rasheed Haruna as the institution’s first substantive Vice Chancellor.

The announcement was made by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Professor Francis Faduyile, following the Council’s fifth meeting held in Kontagora.

Professor Faduyile told journalists that Haruna emerged successful after a rigorous selection process involving six shortlisted candidates.

“Professor Haruna brings a wealth of experience, having served as Acting Vice Chancellor, Provost, and Chairman of the Committee of Provosts,” Faduyile said.

He added that the new Vice Chancellor is expected to officially assume duty on Monday, November 4, 2025.

On the issue of security in the area, the Pro-Chancellor assured staff, students, and parents that Kontagora remains peaceful and conducive for learning.

“I have been to Kontagora several times. It is peaceful, and people live and work there without fear. The university environment is safe and conducive for students,” he said.

Faduyile described FUEK as one of the fastest-growing teacher education institutions in Nigeria, noting its large pool of Ph.D. holders and modern academic facilities.

Originally established as a College of Education, the institution was upgraded to a Federal University of Education by an Act of Parliament in 2021 and began admitting students in March 2025.

With Haruna’s appointment, the university now has substantive leadership to guide its academic and administrative development.

Meanwhile, the Governor of Niger State, Umaru Bago, has congratulated Professor Haruna on his appointment as the substantive Vice Chancellor of FUEK.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, Governor Bago described the appointment as “well-deserved and timely.”

He commended Haruna’s “capacity, competence, and track record of innovative and transformative leadership,” expressing confidence that the new VC will move the young university to an enviable height.

Governor Bago also lauded the Federal Government for the appointment and pledged his administration’s support to ensure Haruna’s success.

“Professor Haruna is a seasoned scholar and administrator whose leadership will strengthen the foundation of this new university and promote excellence in teacher education,” the governor said.

The Federal University of Education, Kontagora, officially commenced operations in March 2025 following its transition from the Federal College of Education, where Professor Haruna previously served as Provost.
