Real Madrid has confirmed that defender Dani Carvajal
will leave the club at the end of the season, ending a highly successful spell
at the Santiago Bernabéu.
In a statement released on Monday, May 18, the Spanish
giants said they are “grateful and affectionate” toward one of the club’s
greatest legends. Carvajal, 34, made 450 appearances for Real Madrid and won 27
trophies, including six UEFA Champions League titles and four La Liga crowns.
Carvajal progressed through Real Madrid’s La Fábrica
youth system before joining Bayer Leverkusen in 2012. He returned to Real
Madrid the following year and went on to become a key player for more than a
decade.
Club president Florentino Pérez praised his legacy,
describing Carvajal as “a legend and a symbol of Real Madrid and its academy.”
Although Carvajal had reportedly hoped to represent
Spain at this summer’s FIFA World Cup, injuries during the campaign are said to
have affected his chances. Spanish media report that Spain coach Luis de la
Fuente is unlikely to include him in the tournament squad.
Carvajal is expected to play his final game for Real
Madrid this weekend at the Santiago Bernabéu against Athletic Bilbao in La
Liga. His departure also comes as Real Madrid prepare for another disappointing
season, with the club set to miss out on major trophies for a second
consecutive year.
