Saudi Arabian Football Federation president Yasser
Al-Misehal has stepped down from his position following the national team's
disappointing exit from the FIFA World Cup.
Al-Misehal announced his resignation on Sunday, taking
responsibility after Saudi Arabia failed to progress beyond the group stage of
the tournament.
The Green Falcons finished at the bottom of Group H
with two points, drawing against Uruguay and Cape Verde before suffering defeat
to Spain, a result that ended their World Cup campaign.
In a statement shared on social media, Al-Misehal
acknowledged that the team's performance fell short of the expectations of
supporters and accepted full responsibility for the outcome.
"The national team's failure to qualify for the
next round of the World Cup is a result that falls short of all our
ambitions," he wrote.
"I take full responsibility and apologise to
everyone who expected to see our team achieve a better result. I believe it is
time to allow a new phase to begin, and for that reason I have decided not to
continue until the end of my current term."
Al-Misehal served as president of the Saudi Arabian
Football Federation for seven years and played a key role in the country's
successful bid to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup.
The 2026 tournament marked Saudi Arabia's third
consecutive World Cup appearance and the seventh in the nation's history.
The team's preparations, however, were disrupted by a
late managerial change after Hervé Renard was replaced by Georgios Donis less
than two months before the competition began.
