Meta has unveiled a major update for WhatsApp that will allow users to connect with others using unique usernames instead of sharing their phone numbers.

The feature, which will be introduced gradually over the coming months, is aimed at strengthening user privacy by preventing phone numbers from being automatically visible in group chats and conversations with new contacts.

According to Meta, users will be able to create a unique username that can be shared in place of their mobile number, making it easier to communicate without revealing personal contact information.

The company said the new system is specifically designed to enhance privacy while giving users greater control over how they are discovered on the platform.

Under the update, users will no longer be able to initiate conversations simply by using a phone number. Instead, anyone wishing to contact another user must know and enter that person's exact username.

Meta also clarified that WhatsApp will not feature a public username directory or search suggestions, meaning usernames cannot be browsed or discovered unless they are intentionally shared.

With WhatsApp serving more than three billion users worldwide, the company acknowledged that not everyone will be able to secure their preferred username due to availability.

The rollout will take place in phases, with users receiving notifications once the feature becomes available in their respective regions.

Meta added that content creators, businesses and organisations will also be able to reserve usernames that match their existing identities on Facebook and Instagram, helping them maintain a consistent presence across the company's platforms.
