Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has
unveiled a 55-man provisional roster as Nigeria begins preparations for
next month’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
Still recovering from the disappointment of missing a
place in the FIFA Intercontinental Playoff for the 2026 World Cup,
Chelle has shifted focus entirely to the continental tournament, aiming to
improve on Nigeria’s runner-up finish at the last edition in Côte
d’Ivoire.
According to exclusive information obtained by
Owngoal, the national team’s training camp will open on December 8 in
Morocco. Prior to that, Chelle is expected to trim the provisional list
to around 30 players, from which the final tournament squad will be
selected.
The provisional roster features a mix of established
internationals and several emerging talents, many of whom have been
closely monitored by the coaching staff in recent months. Chelle sees these
younger players as potential long-term prospects for the national team.
Despite the inclusion of new faces, the core group
of seasoned players remains intact. Chelle’s clear objective for AFCON 2025
is to go one step further than their previous campaign, where Nigeria
fell just short of lifting the trophy after losing to hosts Côte d’Ivoire in
the final.
