No fewer than 150 suspected bandits are feared to have
lost their lives after a boat conveying them reportedly capsized in the Sabon
Gida area of Sokoto State.
According to local sources cited by security analyst
Zagazola Makama, the incident occurred on Saturday evening, March 21, 2026,
when the overcrowded vessel overturned while attempting to cross a water body.
The report indicated that the group, believed to be
armed, was traveling in large numbers when the boat suddenly capsized, plunging
all occupants into the water.
A source familiar with the situation revealed that
many of the individuals were unable to swim, which likely contributed to the
high number of casualties.
“Preliminary information suggests that many of them
could not swim, leading to heavy casualties,” the source said.
Early accounts suggest that none of those onboard
survived the ????, although authorities have yet to issue an official
confirmation as of the time of this report.
If verified, the incident could significantly weaken
criminal networks operating across parts of Nigeria’s North-West region, where
banditry has remained a major security challenge.
Security agencies are expected to provide further
updates as investigations continue.
