The crisis surrounding FIFA President Gianni Infantino has taken a new turn after United States President Donald Trump threw his support behind the embattled football administrator, warning that replacing him would be a “terrible mistake.”

Trump’s intervention comes as pressure mounts on Infantino, with three major continental football confederations — UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and CONCACAF — challenging his leadership over a controversial proposal involving FIFA’s commercial rights.

In a social media post on Monday, Trump described Infantino as a “fantastic” leader and cautioned FIFA against removing him. His comments represent a significant political boost for Infantino as he faces increasing opposition within the global football community.

The dispute centres on a proposal to sell a 20 per cent stake in FIFA’s World Cup commercial rights to private investors for approximately $4.2 billion.

Although FIFA eventually abandoned the proposal following widespread criticism, UEFA, AFC and CONCACAF accused Infantino of acting unilaterally and undermining the trust of FIFA’s member associations.

In a joint letter, the three confederations called for an independent review of the proposal and questioned the process through which the plan was developed and presented. They also warned that further measures could follow if FIFA failed to guarantee that similar decisions would not be taken without adequate consultation in the future.

The controversy has developed into one of the most significant leadership challenges of Infantino’s presidency. Several national football associations, including Norway and England, have withdrawn their support for his re-election and called for changes within FIFA.

Despite the growing opposition, Infantino continues to enjoy considerable backing from a number of football nations and confederations, particularly across Africa and parts of Asia and the Americas.

Trump’s public intervention has now added a powerful political voice to the battle over Infantino’s future. The US president has maintained a close relationship with the FIFA chief, particularly during preparations for the 2026 World Cup, which was hosted jointly by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Trump had also previously been linked to support for Infantino for a major international position, including the role of United Nations secretary-general.

The latest development has therefore elevated the dispute beyond FIFA’s internal governance, turning it into a wider international contest over the future direction and leadership of global football.

With Infantino facing resistance from influential confederations while retaining the backing of Trump and several member associations, the struggle is expected to intensify ahead of the FIFA presidential election scheduled for March 2027.

The key question now is whether Infantino can withstand the growing revolt and secure another term, or whether the coalition opposing him will succeed in forcing a change at the top of world football.
