The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has raised
concerns over the rising cost of living, urging governments to increase
allowances for workers as a temporary relief measure.
In a statement released on Monday by TUC President
Festus Osifo and General Secretary Nuhu Toro, the union called for enhanced
social welfare packages to help workers cope with inflationary pressures.
“As we step into 2026, Congress remains deeply
concerned about the harsh economic realities confronting workers,” the
statement said.
The TUC appealed to federal, state, and local
governments to urgently review and boost workers’ allowances ahead of the full
implementation of a new National Minimum Wage in 2027, in line with existing
labour laws.
The statement also called on workers to remain united
and to strengthen the labour movement. It reaffirmed the union’s commitment to
engaging the government and employers on policies that are worker-friendly.
“In view of persistent inflation and rising living
costs, the TUC calls on governments at all levels to urgently review and
enhance workers’ allowances as a temporary relief measure, pending the full
implementation of a new National Minimum Wage in 2027,” the union said.
The Congress emphasised that Nigerian workers should
not bear the brunt of economic reforms without adequate protection and support.
“Unity remains our greatest strength. Let us move into
2026 with renewed resolve, strengthened solidarity, and unwavering commitment
to the ideals that bind us together. Together, we shall continue to build a
labour movement that stands firmly for workers and for Nigeria,” the statement
added.
