A man accused of killing four young children at a
daycare centre in Uganda has stirred shock and anger after reportedly laughing
during court proceedings.
Christopher Okello Onyum appeared in court in Kampala
this week as his trial officially got underway. He is facing four counts of
murder over the April 2, 2026 attack at a childcare facility.
According to prosecutors, Onyum allegedly gained entry
into the Ggaba Early Childhood Development Centre by pretending to be a parent
before launching a knife attack on the children. The victims—aged between two
and three years—were identified as Gideon Eteku, Kaise Alungat, Ignatius
Sserwange, and Ryan Odeke.
Court documents indicate that the suspect had earlier
made a statement admitting to the killings. However, when formally charged in
court, he pleaded not guilty.
Prosecutors revealed that a medical evaluation found
him mentally fit to stand trial, noting that while his thinking was considered
normal, he allegedly held beliefs linked to gaining wealth through human
sacrifice. Investigators also claim the attack was premeditated and planned
over several days.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage across the
country, with emotional scenes reported in court as grieving relatives reacted
strongly to the suspect’s presence.
Authorities said Onyum was nearly attacked by an angry
mob immediately after the incident before being taken into custody.
Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the country’s army chief and son
of Yoweri Museveni, has stated that efforts will be made to seek the death
penalty if the suspect is convicted.
The case continues to draw national attention, with
many calling for swift justice as the legal process unfolds.
