University workers across the country on Tuesday
staged protests to press home their demands for improved welfare and the
fulfillment of outstanding agreements with the Federal Government.
The demonstration is part of a nationwide action
organized by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Senior Staff
Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff
Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU).
The protest followed the expiration of a two-week
ultimatum issued by the unions to the government to address their
grievances, which revolve around salary adjustments and welfare concerns.
Among their key demands are the renegotiation of
the 2009 Agreement with the Federal Government, the immediate
implementation of the 25 and 35 per cent salary increments, and the payment
of withheld salaries owed to members.
Protesters, carrying placards with various
inscriptions, called on the government to act swiftly to avert what they
described as a looming industrial crisis within the university system.
The unions warned that failure to meet their demands
could lead to a total shutdown of administrative and support services in
universities across the country.
